Do you ever get that terrified feeling before you make a phone prospecting call? You know that feeling, that makes you “terrified of the phone”. I use to be the same way. I’ll be honest with you it still happens every now and then. It’s really funny actually, most of the time all the things you worry about and over analyze never even happen.
“I Don’t Want to Call”
I’ll tell you it terrifies the heck out of you, so much actually, your heart starts to race, palms get a little sweaty, your mouth is dry and it gets hard to swallow, you reach for the phone and it feels like your hand and the phone are two magnets pushing against each other, when you actually grab it the weight is incredible, it’s like the phone weighs 100lbs. It terrifies you so much that most people never even make the calls or they make every excuse like “phone prospecting ear infection” and when they do make the call, they pray, and pray, and pray so hard hoping that the answering machine picks up so they don’t have to talk to anyone. I’ve been there, I know that feeling, then it’s almost a relief when they don’t answer and the knot in your stomach drops, you start to breathe a little easier, you almost feel happy but disappointed in yourself at the same time.
Don’t Hate Phone Prospecting
-You can’t say the wrong thing to the right person, or the right thing to the wrong person.-
Don’t hate phone prospecting, this is a naturally process that everyone faces. You think that Top Leaders are just born with excellent phone skills? No, they practice and fail, practice and fail; it’s just a process everyone must go through. There are a few tricks that make the learning process a lot easier. The biggest thing I believe that will help you prospecting on the phone or in person is understanding your FEAR.
Prospecting Through The Phone
Rule 1: Always project confidence. I do NOT try to sign up every Joe Shmoe I ever run into either. There are negative people out there in the world that I do NOT want to be in business with..Focus on a target market!!
Rule 2: Call your warm market. Making the introduction call. I hated making the calls to the same people I had pitched numerous other MLM’s but I did it anyway and some of them will joined.
Rule 3: Always followup as they never will. I don’t care how much your prospect wants income or even likes your product, don’t EVER rely on them to follow up with you, it just won’t happen.
Rule 4: Leave a proper voicemail. The purpose of a voicemail is to get a call back, not a signup.
Rule 5: Get over being offended. You are going to get rejection. It is impossible to get to the top without it. Get over it. You are going to have people that NEED what you have that will still say no. Then, the ones that DO say yes, that have all the potential but won’t do a darn thing. Don’t let this pull you away from your dreams. If you are struggling with this, see rule #1.

Ryan I love the piccie you’ve used here:) I think a lot of people don’t like calling people because they associate it with someone phoning them trying to sell them double glazing!
If you dread doing anything, whatever it is it will show. So if phoning prospects is critical to you getting business you need to gain more confidence or find an alternative method that gets you the same results.
Ryan, great tips ones that will definitely help. Could not agree with you more.
Ryan, you’ve nailed it on the phone calling fear! Love the imagery in your story – I could feel that feeling and I’m just reading a post! Lol! Thanks for sharing this!

Great post. While the phone is one of the biggest fears, it is also one of the biggest profit generators…I say…feel the fear and do it anyways!

Hi, Ryan,
Thank you for sharing these great tips! I agree most with what Terry says in his remarks : Fear… that but do it anyway! Phone calls are great ways to really connect on a person-to-person level. How can we possibly help if we can’t even connect well?
I found two points particularly helpful:
1) Do it with the full intention of ‘making the life better’ for the other person
(learned from Tim Sales)
2) Let go of the outcome, focus 100% on the other person (learned from Michael
Oliver)
You point 5 is a great one too! Until we can see that we are doing a great job and “no”s aren’t personal, we can never fill relaxed in phoning others.
Happy Phone Connecting!

I think as long as you have decent phone etiquette, you won’t have a hard time being turned down.

Joana, thank you. You can never say the wrong things to the right people and the right things to the wrong people. But having great phone skills will turn better resorts. Thanks Ryan
